Position Summary:
The Fleet Mechanic plays a vital role in ensuring the operational readiness and reliability of VINCO's diverse fleet, which includes vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment. The position demands an experienced technician with in-depth knowledge of diagnostics, repair processes, and preventative maintenance. The Fleet Mechanic will be responsible for minimizing equipment downtime and supporting the efficient execution of our services. The ideal candidate will be a problem solver, safety-focused, and capable of performing high-quality repairs in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities and Deliverables
Equipment Maintenance and Repair:
Perform comprehensive diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on a wide range of gasoline- and diesel-powered equipment, including but not limited to: engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, steering, suspension, and cooling systems.
Execute preventative maintenance schedules, ensuring all fleet assets receive timely oil changes, lubrication, fluid checks, filter replacements, tire rotations, and other essential services.
Inspect equipment for wear, damage, or safety concerns, documenting findings and taking corrective actions to prevent potential failures.
Overhaul and rebuild components, such as engines, transmissions, and differentials, utilizing the latest repair techniques and adhering to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) specifications.
Calibrate and adjust vehicle systems using diagnostic tools and equipment to maintain optimal performance and compliance with environmental and safety standards.
Provide on-site field service and repairs as necessary, ensuring minimal impact on service schedules.
Work Order Management:
Create, maintain, and close work orders for all service activities, ensuring accurate records of labor hours, parts used, and repair actions taken.
Coordinate with department heads to schedule repairs and maintenance, prioritizing work based on operational needs and equipment urgency.
Review completed work orders to ensure compliance with company standards and identify opportunities for process improvement.
Develop and implement corrective maintenance plans for recurring issues, minimizing the likelihood of future breakdowns.
Parts Procurement and Inventory Management:
Identify and order parts and materials required for maintenance and repair tasks, verifying quality and compatibility with fleet assets.
Manage inventory levels, ensuring critical parts and supplies are available to prevent repair delays.
Maintain records of parts usage and costs, assisting the Fleet Manager in budget tracking and inventory audits.
Establish relationships with parts vendors to negotiate favorable pricing and delivery terms, reducing costs and turnaround times.
Safety and Compliance:
Adhere to all occupational health and safety regulations, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe handling of hazardous materials, and adherence to company safety policies.
Conduct regular safety inspections on fleet vehicles and equipment, identifying and addressing any potential hazards.
Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements, emissions standards, and inspection protocols.
Participate in safety training sessions and contribute to a culture of continuous safety improvement.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety records, including inspections, repairs, and certifications.
Fleet Operations Support:
Operate and test vehicles, trucks, and equipment to confirm the quality of repairs and identify additional maintenance needs.
Assist with vehicle and equipment mobilization, including transporting assets to job sites or vendor facilities as needed.
Provide technical guidance and training to other team members on proper maintenance techniques and safety practices.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of fleet maintenance processes, including providing feedback on equipment performance and repair procedures.
Support fleet expansion and upgrade initiatives, including pre-purchase inspections and integration of new equipment into the existing fleet.
Field Service and Emergency Repairs:
Respond promptly to emergency repair requests, providing quick and effective solutions to restore equipment functionality.
Carry out mobile repairs at job sites, utilizing a fully equipped service vehicle to minimize downtime and avoid disruption to operations.
Assist in winter season preparation, ensuring all snow removal equipment is in optimal working condition and ready for use at a moment's notice.
Administrative Duties:
Maintain detailed service logs and records, documenting all work performed and materials used.
Provide input on fleet performance and maintenance strategies during regular review meetings with the Fleet Manager.
Utilize fleet management software for tracking maintenance schedules, inventory, and equipment usage data.
Prepare reports on fleet condition and upcoming maintenance needs for review by management.
Qualifications:
Advanced understanding of automotive and heavy equipment systems, including engine mechanics, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
Proficiency in diagnostic tools and software, with the ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and manuals.
Skilled in using hand, power, and shop tools, as well as diagnostic equipment, with a commitment to safe work practices.
Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills, with attention to detail in documenting work performed.
Strong problem-solving abilities, capable of diagnosing and addressing issues quickly and effectively.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds.
Capable of standing, walking, bending, and kneeling for extended periods.
Comfortable working in various conditions, including outdoor environments, inclement weather, and confined spaces.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED required; completion of a recognized program in vehicle repair and maintenance is highly preferred.
Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in vehicle and heavy equipment repair, including exposure to diesel and hydraulic systems.
Experience with DOT compliance and related inspections is a plus.
